What to Expect on Your First Visit

Visiting any new church for the first time can be awkward.  We want you to feel comfortable while you worship with us. Here are answers to some common questions and what you can expect on your first visit.

1. Finding our church

Our church is located about two miles south of I-85, on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road (Exit #111) in Suwanee, across from Kroger at the Taylor Road intersection.  If you are driving north on Lawrenceville-Suwanee, we are just past Dean Road on the left.  From Old Peachtree Road (Exit #109), travel east on Old Peachtree, right onto Dean Road, and left onto Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd.  NOTE: Some GPS’s will try to direct you north of I-85.  Just say no, and follow the directions above!

2. What do I do with my children?

Our church has a staffed nursery for every service. The nursery is for children two years of age and younger and is located on the main level just inside the foyer.  Children aged 3 years through 3rd grade join their parents for the first part of the worship service before being invited to children’s church.

3. What's the Sunday schedule?

Our worship begins at 10:30 AM Sunday mornings.

If you are a first time visitor, someone will greet you warmly and show you where to find your place.

Sunday nights at 6:30 pm we have Life Groups. These groups, located in homes, are a way to build deeper connections, prayer support, learning and impact through meaningful Christian community. Everyone is encouraged to join in! For more information, look at our Life Groups Page listed under "Our Ministries".

Also, about every six weeks, we have a Church Family Gathering at 6:00 PM on Sunday evenings.  This is a time to eat, share life, and learn about what is happening with our church.

4. What do you offer at other times?

On Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 pm during the public school year, we offer a Life Group for adults and AWANA Kids Club for children through 5th grade.

Awana Kids Club is a great way to help your children learn about the Bible and missions while having a whole lot of fun. Kids earn awards by memorizing Scripture and completing other learning activities which help prepare them in a positive way for faith and life.

NOTE:  During the summer months, we have a different schedule.  Call the church office for more information.

5. What should I wear?

There is no dress code at Horizon Baptist Church. We care more about you than what you wear.  You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.  Most just come as they are, though some choose to dress up a bit.

6. Will I be called out or embarrassed during the service?

No, absolutely not!  We care about you and know that a first visit can make a person nervous.  People will likely greet you warmly during the welcome time and before and after church.  We are a loving, welcoming church!  You will not be singled out for special focus.

7. Am I expected to give an offering?

No. As our guest, we want our worship service to be a gift to you (and God).  Please don't feel any obligation to participate in the offering. Members and regular attenders give offerings as their way to say “thank you” to God and to further the work of His kingdom through our church.  If you feel comfortable doing so, we invite you to complete a Connection Card and place that in the offering plate at the end of the service, but you are not expected to give an offering.

8. What does it mean to become a member of Horizon, and how does that happen?

Membership at Horizon is a commitment to join our church family and get fully involved in Christian community.  No one is required to become a member to attend, but we invite you to do so as an important way of setting down your spiritual roots and joining with a body of believers.   Becoming a member is a two-step process:

Step 1.  Simply tell us that you would like to join! You may do this by telling Pastor Sid, either at the end of the service, or by making an appointment to talk with him.

Step 2.  If you have not yet declared your decision to be a follower of Jesus by being baptized, then we will schedule a time to take this important step.  However, if you have already accepted God’s gift of eternal life and were baptized as a believer elsewhere, you may join either ‘by statement’ or ‘by promise of a letter’ from another church.  If you don’t know what this means, no worries.  We will explain it to you when you talk with us.

9. I Want To Serve

Horizon is a church that welcomes and empowers people to use their God-given gifts to serve.  Rather than squeezing you into something that does not fit you, we would prefer to learn from you what you enjoy and feel called to do. Whether you are a member, or just attending, we can help you find ways to serve.  Just ask us!  Besides service in the church, we also reach out to our community and around the world through service projects.

If you have other questions, call us, email us, or ask someone when you arrive.  Whether you're new to the area and looking for a church home, or if it's been a long time since you've attended church at all, we hope your first visit at Horizon Baptist Church will be awesome!  We exist to serve you and your family, and we are looking forward to meeting you personally.   We want you to feel right at home and become a part of the Horizon family!
